Manchester City for the League Cup final despite losing from
Manchester United defeated its host Manchester City 1-0 on Wednesday, in a match that brought them together at the Etihad Stadium in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final.
The only goal of the match was scored by Serbian Nemanja Matic in the 35th minute, but it was not enough to cross United for the final, after City beat him by winning the two games (3-2).
The seriousness appeared in the match 7 minutes after the start, after Sergio Aguero received a cross from Ilkay Gandogan inside the penalty area, to meet with a header on the bird, which was deflected by David de Gea.
A few seconds later, Riad Mehrez hit the globe, de Gea pushed him away with his foot, before returning to save his goal again from Aguero's powerful shot, turning it into a corner.
Man City dominated the game, while United appeared unable to advance to the penalty area of the hosts all the time.
Contrary to the progress of the match, United managed to catch the window of the Citizens from the first opportunity they had in the 35th minute, after the ball reached Nemanja Matic inside the penalty area, to meet with a creeping ground shot, which Claudio Bravo was unable to tackle.
After a few minutes, City managed to equalize the result by Rahim Sterling, but the goal was canceled after the referee indicated that there was an infiltration of the English star, so that the first half ended with the Red Devils advancing with a goal without response.
Man United had the courage at the beginning of the second half, and he reached Bravo goal with more than one opportunity, including a crawling shot from Anthony Marcial, caught by the Chilean goalkeeper.
Sterling squandered the opportunity of an accomplished goal after penetrating into the penalty area, and deflected Viktor Lindelov and then de Gea, before he toppled the ball over the crossbar, to miss the opportunity to tie on City.
De Gea continued to shine in defending his goal in the face of all the heavenly team.
The men of coach Olli Gunnar Solskjaer were hit in the last quarter of an hour, after Matic got a second yellow card, to be sent off and United finished the match with 10 players.
Man City tried to take advantage of the numerical deficiency by calming the game in the last minutes, by rotating the ball in the middle of the stadium, especially as the guests retreated to the back areas.
Aguero received a cross pass that put him face-to-face with De Gea, to put her with great skill into the net, before spoiling his joy by canceling the goal for his offside.
Manchester City players managed to avoid the arrival of the Manchester United players to the Bravo goal in the last minutes, and the referee whistled at the end of the match by winning the Red Devils (1-0), but the result gave the Citizens the opportunity to qualify for the final match.
